These Top 5 Picks Are Worth Your Money

Are you a beginner sewer and looking for the best sewing machines to practice on? There are several things you need to know before buying a sewing machine. Price, performance, and features are very important factors when making the final decision. Of course, it does not hurt if it looks cute, too!

1. Brother Laura Ashley Limited Edition

This $200 sewing machine is best for home decorations because of its 155 built-in decorative stitches option. It has 11 sewing or quilting feet and a high-tech needle threading system. Additionally, it has 8 styles of 1-step auto-sized buttonholes and 55 alphanumeric stitches. An extra wide table is also provided which will enable you to sew window treatments and king-sized quilts. It is a bit noisy though but definitely a good buy.

2. Brother CS6000i

What I love about this is its hard carry-on case that makes it is easy to transport. I also love the container for basic sewing accessories located on its arm. It also has several styles of one-step button holes. The best part is that Brother CS6000i sews really fast so you get to finish your projects faster. Despite its modern features, its tension is still manually controlled by a dial which can be a pro or con, depending on your preference.

3. Singer Fashion Mate

For $148.26, you can get this Singer Fashion Mate. It is a step up from the basic sewing machine and has good reviews. This machine has a great StayBright LED light which helps illuminate your sewing surface. It also has 70 pre-programmed stitch designs. Threading the needle has also become easy with its easy threading system with the automatic needle threader. It’s just a bummer that it is difficult to get it fixed when it gets broken.

4. Janome Hello Kitty

I’m a big Hello Kitty fan so that’s one good reason why I love this product! But do not let the cute design fool you. Its aluminum interior makes it good for heavy duty use plus its small knobs are perfect if you have little kids learning how to use a sewing machine! This machine works hard and works fast. It is not complicated to operate, however it does not have a top bobbin. Get this cute collectible product for $129 only!

5. Singer S16 Studio

This sewing machine is the best choice for professional sewers and quilters. It better be because it is sold at $550! Consider buying this only when you are serious about sewing. It has a longer arm so you can sew bigger and longer projects and a true straight stitch feature so you can never go wrong with your straight stitches . Other great features are easy threading because of its automatic needle threader. This ensures an easy start. Too bad this is a bit pricey!

I am ready for new challenges like making a dress, a leather bomber jacket or maybe some items for my bedroom!

I’ve had the Brother cs6000 since 2005. For the past 10 years I’ve only used it for small jobs. It’s useless in quilting, short of nailing it down to the table, I have not found a way to keep it from sliding around when quilting. Have tried mats, weights behind it, everything. It’s only good for traveling because of the weight, or lack thereof. Finally am able to sell it, and going back to a Singer.

I was surprised that there were no Baby Lock or Bernina or Husqvarna sewing machines on this list.

The brother Laura Ashley machine you have pictured is not a $200 machine. The CX155LA model is the $200 option. The one pictured is about $645-$715 depending on where you buy. I own a CX155LA and it’s fantastic for this beginner. I quilt with it, make aprons, and handbags also. It’s easy to use and figure out, and a real workhorse. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d3414587f49715dc0f8d235b07e095ada8baedbee69c08320c667231fd9d6c49.jpg

when shopping for a machine look for a local shop that you can purchase and also get the support you need as well as maintenance. Good ones offer free basic classes on using your machine free. There are many good machines out there, but if you don’t know how to use or have a reliable place to take for repairs a $12,000 machine is no more useful than a $200 machine. I personally
love my Bernina and our local dealer who provides training, support, and repair professionals.
