Chevron Quilt: An Easy Step-by-Step Guide

Aside from being a passionate collector of fabrics and threads, I also love storing up beddings, especially blankets. But instead of buying a new cozy blanket, why not make one instead? A Chevron quilt pattern is incredibly simple, but the zigzag designs are captivating. These quilts are also great for upcycling your old fabric scraps. I always thought chevron designs were incredibly complicated, but in reality, they are super simple and straightforward.

What you’ll need:

• 1 white layer cake
• 1 printed layer cake
• thread

Tools:

• sewing machine
• rotary cutter
• flat iron
• ruler

Step 1. Put your white and blue layer cake together

Start off by using a blue and a white layer cake squares (Layer cakes are the 10″x10″ squares of fabric made by Moda fabrics). Each square measuring 10 square inches. Put those right sides together.

Step 2. Sew and cut

To make the half-square triangles, sew all the way around the outside edge, 1/4 of an inch, and then cut it both ways diagonally.

Step 3. Cut it diagonally

Cut the square diagonally, from corner to corner. You’ll have four triangles as a result.

Step 4. Iron the fabric square

Iron each half-square triangles to press that flat seam.

Step 5. Lay all these half-square triangles in a row

Do one row where the whites come together, which is also your background color or your pop color, then the next row is where your colors come together, creating your chevron as a result.

Step 6. Lay out a row together on the table

Position them so that the whites come together, then another row where the colors come together.

Step 7. Adding white and colored

Add the whites to your whites and colors to your colors then proceed to do your next row.

Step 8. Whites should be together in the center

You can attach from row to row, and put the whites together.

Step 9. Form a zigzag line

Sew them row to row and see how that chevron is forming a zigzag back and forth. Once you’ve sewn these zigzag patterns, your chevron quilt is now complete. Not hard at all, right?
