Learn To Create a Stylized Quilted American Flag

Flag day is a wonderful day to display your quilt project that has a patriotic accent. It can be a perfect quilt gift to veterans or member of the armed forced in your neighborhood. You can also make patriotic quilt designs to display in your home for a family reunion.

So, if you’re excited to celebrate summer with red, white, and blue quilts, then, let’s learn from Erin Russek of McCall’s Quilting’s tutorial of machine quilting design on the Scrappy Flag Block. She will teach us a block that is accentuated with a kind of blowing look. So here it is.

Here are the things you will need:

  • Scrap fabric that has red, white, and blue with stars
  • Safety pins
  • Sewing machine

Instructions:

Step 1. Make a flag pattern out of scrap fabrics

Cut the fabrics to make a flag-like pattern and pin it together. Make sure to add some extra fabric for the borders (follow the pattern in the image).

Step 2. Start quilting

So to start, drop your needles between the borders and inside the pattern. Bring up your bobbin thread so you can hold on to that.

Step 3. Make swirls or parallel wavy lines

Now, start quilting. What you’re going to do is make a wavy parallel line. Add some swirls so it will look like a wind. Just like all machine quilting, keep your stitches as even as possible.

Step 4. Continue the same steps until you’re done

Continue doing the same steps and make sure to remove the pins. Make more swirls, or just follow the pattern with another wavy line. Ther’s nothing really very precise about this. Just have fun until you’re done.

You can watch the video here of McCall’s tutorial for more detailed demonstration:

This is one good demonstration for a beautiful all-over machine quilting design on the scrappy flag block. The simple innovative quilting pattern shows a gentle swirling breeze. It also chooses the perfect patriotic colors of red, white, and blue. If you want to make more, the designs depend on your choice. Just have fun and be creative.
