Easy DIY Pencil Case | Back to School Sewing Project

September 20, 2022 By Sewing.com 1 Comment

Keep all your pens organized with this back-to-school sewing project — a cool DIY pencil case! Your kids will surely love this!

My bag’s like a black hole sometimes. I keep losing my pen in it. And if I leave my pen uncapped, it is a recipe for disaster because it leaks everywhere! I’m sure you have been there, too. That’s why I need a DIY pencil case.

DePENdable DIY Pencil Case

If you need to organize your pens and pencils, this DIY pencil case should top your list of sewing projects for the weekend! Let me share what happened yesterday. I was having a terrible time because I lost my second pencil case and the week hasn’t even ended yet. My kids needed a pencil case as well because school’s starting soon. I wanted to buy one  but then I realized I can make a pencil case without spending a dollar. And because I made it, I am sure it is going to be awesome and unique! Ultimately, I did. Hooray!

Just follow the steps I took below and you will also be able to create a fabulous DIY pencil case before school starts!

For this DIY Pencil Case, you’ll need:

• any kind of thick fabric
• Zipper (9″ – 12″)
• Masking tape
• Scissors
• Pen or fabric chalk
• Thread (craft or embroidery)
• Sewing needle (large for thick fabric)

Ready? Get set…Sew!

Step 1. Trace and cut

First of all, measure and mark out an even square. The length would depend on the length of your longest pen.

Step 2. Create the tabs

Next, make the tabs for the sides by cutting two pieces of rectangular fabrics with a sharp scissor. While you’re at it, make sure that they are equal and should be enough to fold over and grab on to.

Step 3. Sew the zipper

Then, get a zipper and position it face down on the middle of the fabric. Its edges should meet the edges of the square to form a cylinder. Moving on, we will need to hand sew the zipper with back stitches.

Step 4.  Stitch the side

Now, pull the zipper to the middle of the pencil case and fold the tab in half and stick it center to the zipper inside. Then, tape the open side of the zipper too. Lastly, hand sew the open sides.

Step 5. Trim and pull inside out

Now, trim off the excess zipper and fabrics. For the final reveal, turn the DIY pencil case inside out.

this looks so doable. now can I find a way to make this so it has an extra tap on the long side and make button holes so it will fit into a 3 ring? I will let you know. at least in the meantime, that pencil case is available in the dollar store. my husband and I give 6 sets of school supplies and extra wipes and toys to two of our favorite teachers, and my Kiwanis group is generous to pull together and donate so that the teachers have extra tools at one of our 6 elementary schools.
