Linen Tank Top: Lightweight Summer Staple You Can Sew Yourself

It was hot outside, so you went through your closet to find something comfortable to wear but nothing felt right. Later, you also checked the stores only to find synthetic fabrics that stick to your skin. With the lack of choices, maybe it’s time to start making your own clothes, but you’re unsure where to begin. Here’s a great beginner-friendly project that fits your current summer need: a linen tank top.

Linen is one of the easiest fabrics for beginners to handle because it doesn’t slip. It also feels comfortable to wear in hot weather. This tutorial guides you through creating a basic linen tank top that you’re going to love this summer.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 to 1.5 yards of linen
  • Matching thread
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pins or sewing clips
  • Measuring tape
  • Safety pin
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron

Tip: Before cutting anything, wash and dry your linen to prevent it from shrinking after subsequent. If you’re buying fabric in-store, ask for linen by weight. If shopping online, search for “lightweight linen” or “medium-weight linen fabric”.

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric

Grab a tank top from your closet and fold it in half. Then lay the folded edge of the tank top along the folded edge of your linen. Trace around the full shape and leave about half an inch of space for seams. Use that outline to cut one front and then repeat the same step for the back piece.

Adjust the neckline or hem as you trace. For a lower front neckline, scoop it slightly and keep the back higher. To change the length, shift the outline up or down before cutting. Then cut two rectangles for the straps. Two inches wide by 14 inches long works well, but feel free to adjust the length.

Step2: Sew the Main Body

With the front and back pieces ready, place them right sides together and start with the shoulder seams. Sew straight across each shoulder and use a ½-inch seam allowance. Then, sew straight along both side seams the same way.

Press your seams open or to one side. If the fabric frays at the edges, finish the raw seams with a zigzag stitch or trim them with pinking shears.

Step 3: Make and Attach the Straps

Take your strap pieces and fold each one in half lengthwise. Sew down the long edge with a narrow seam. Then turn each strap right-side-out using a safety pin and press it flat using an iron.

Try on the top and mark where to attach the straps. Note that most placements work best along the neckline. Pin each strap to the inside edge of the front and back neckline. Stitch the straps down securely so they stay in place while you wear the top. A second line of stitching adds extra strength.

Step 4: Finish the Edges

For the bottom hem, fold the fabric up by ½ inch, press, then fold again and sew along the edge. Use the same double-fold method for the neckline and armholes.

Curved areas, like the neckline and armholes, can be tricky to sew at first. If you want a neater finish, use bias tape to enclose those curved edges. Use plenty of pins or clips to hold the fabric in place.

Try It On!

That’s it, you just made your own linen tank! 🙌

Put it on and check the fit. If it looks wrinkly, don’t worry. Linen naturally wrinkles, so don’t stress about pressing everything flat. The texture gives your top a soft, lived-in look that suits summer days.

That’s a Wrap on Your Linen Tank Top
