How to Sew a Tie
If you're looking for a gift that your Dad will appreciate, why not make something very special? A gift where you can easily make rather than shop. There are many DIY ideas you can make for them and I'm sure he'll appreciate it more with the effort you had put into his gift. Plus, it's really practical and inexpensive.
In honor of all the fathers everywhere, let me share you a tutorial I got fro 123 Dream it channel on how to make ties that you can make as a fathers day gift. So, follow the steps here and let's get started.
Here are the materials you will need:
- Cutting mat
- 50cm of cotton
- 1m of woolen fabric
- 25cm of English lining
- 1m raw silk or whatever fabric you want for the tie
- 9cm bias
- Measuring tape
- Ruler
- Rotating cutter
- Threads that matches the color of tie and bias
- Pins
- Fabric chalk
- Small scissors
- No.6 needles
- “J” foot or standard foot
- Iron
Instructions:
Step 1. Triangle pattern
Cut two triangles for the pattern. The first triangle will measure 16.5 by 16.5 by 24 cm in diagonal. The next triangle which is the smaller will measure 8cm by 8cm by 24 11.5cm in diagonal. This measurement already includes the seam allowance.
Step 2. To make the triangle lining pieces
Place the lining at the corner of both triangle and mark them with a chalk. For a more precise cut, I suggest you use a rotating cutter and a metal ruler to make a straight cut. Now the lining pieces are ready.
Step 3. To make the interlining 1
For the interlining 1, you have to cut this pattern pieces in cotton. Follow the measurement in the image.
Step 4. To make the interlining 2
For the interlining 2, cut the piece in a woolen fabric. This will give your tie some shape. Mark the pattern on the woolen fabric and cut it to the bias.
Step 5. To make the tie fabric
To cut the ties fabric, it is recommended to use a raw silk. Mark the pattern on the raw silk and cut. This last piece is really long.
Step 6. Placing the triangle pieces
Put the English lining (triangle piece) on the end of the tie. On the widest it should be 1 cm inside, and on the smaller side, it should be a half centimeter. Cut the remaining fabric in the corner.
Step 7. Sew
Sew the pieces with 1cm seam allowance.
Step 8. Fold and sew
From the corner down, mark 3cm. Fold and sew on the line. This is one of the most important steps for your tie.
Step 9. Iron
Repeat the procedure on the other side, turn around and iron where you sew. It is important to iron, so the stitches are nice and flat.
Step 10. Place the cotton on the center of the woolen fabric
Center the cotton on the woolen fabric and pin it.
Step 11. Place the cotton and woolen fabric in the middle of the tie fabric
Place the woolen fabric with cotton in the middles of the tie fabric piece.
Step 12. Insert
Insert the tip of the tie in the lining.
Step 13. Fold
Fold the right side to the border of the lining and remove the pins underneath, then pin again.
Step 14. Pin
Fold the left side and fold 1cm in the middle. Pin all the length of the tie.
Step 15. Sew by hand
Sew it by hand with an invisible stitch. Always pass the needle in the middle so that the stitches and the threads will remain hidden. Continue sewing until you finish all the length of the tie.
Step 16. Stitch the lining to close
Make a stitch between the fabric and the lining close it. Reinforce the stitch and hide the thread. Repeat the same procedure ob the other side.
Step 17. Put the bias
On the widest part of the tie onto the tip, mark 29 cm up and put the bias. Fold the sides inside 1cm and sew it with an invisible stitch. Don't forget to reinforce the stitch.
Step 18. Iron and you're done
Finally iron everything. You're done! Now you know how to make ties.
