Yarn Choices
When it comes to chunky knit blanket yarn, there is a big variety of options to choose from! It all depends on your personal preferences and favorites. One thing is for certain, to knit the perfect cuddly blanket you have to go for a soft and fleecy yarn.
Let’s have a look at the best wool options for a knitted blanket.
1. Merino Wool
Merino wool is one of the fanciest and trendiest yarns that took the world by storm in recent years! Its natural fibers are extra soft, bouncy and thick, making it perfect for a chunky blanket. Merino wool is a bit expensive but if you want to feel the luxurious vibes, I highly recommend it.
2. Chenille Yarn
Chenille yarn is also a very popular choice for a DIY chunky knit blanket. It’s a lightweight synthetic yarn that is fuzzy and comfy, and extremely easy to carry around. Chenille is a cheaper option that will do wonders for your hand-knitted blanket.
What You Need:
What I love the most about a giant knit blanket is that it can be knitted by hand. There are no special supplies or tools needed. Except for the yarn, of course.
- 3-4 skeins of yarn (8 oz)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Step 1: Slip Knot
The chunky knit blanket pattern is extremely easy to pick up. But you have to start somewhere. The first thing you need to do is tie a tight knot at the end of the yarn thread. Trim off any excess yarn.
Be gentle as chunky yarn can be easily damaged so you have to make sure to avoid that. Once you have the basic knot in place, it’s time to create a slip knot.

Step 2: Make a Chain
The first row of the jumbo knit blanket consists of a 16 loop chain. Start with the first slip knot, grab the working yarn through it, and make a loop.
Repeat until you get a whole chain. Make sure your stitches are loose because tight stitches can ruin the giant yarn blanket.
Step 3: Knit the First Row
To proceed, flip the chain over with the backside up. Find the end loop of the chain, and place it upwards so you can begin with the first row.
Put your finger under the small middle bump. You need to pull the working yarn, create a loop, and repeat this along the chain.
When you’re done with the first row, the bottom would be beautifully braided.
Step 4: Knit All Chunky Blanket Rows
To knit the whole blanket, put your hand through the loop, grab the yarn, and pull it out—this will make another loop. Repeat time and time again, finishing up all the rows until you reach the perfect length for your blanket.
There’s only one tricky thing in the whole process. No matter the stitch direction you are following, you always have to skip the first loop on each row.
This way, you can make a pretty braid along the edges of the blanket.
Step 5: Finishing Touch
The final step is probably the easiest one yet. What you need to do is take two loops and pull the working yarn through the openings to create a new loop.
Then grab the new loop and the one next to it and pull the working yarn through them again. Repeat until you reach the end of the row.
When you are done and you need to handle the hanging yarn piece, make a small tight knot and trim it. Try to blend this final knot with the blanket by sewing it or weaving it through the back.
And there you have it—your own warm and fuzzy knit chunky blanket!
