9 Sewing Projects for Christmas You Can Give as Gifts
1. Christmas Place Mat and Cutlery Holder
All you'll need for this one are Christmas-inspired fabric, a pen, and a ruler. You might want to make it slightly bigger so it won't move a lot.
Focus on cutting the fabric and keeping it straight since we want it to be proportional as much as possible. Once done, it should look something like the image above!
2. Apron
If you see yourself spending a lot of time in the kitchen during the holidays, a DIY cloth napkin apron should come in handy. Here's how it's done:
- Fold the bottom and side edges by about a half-inch, then stitch.
- Next, fold the top by about one and a half inches since this is where we'll insert the cloth ribbon. Buy one that is around 60 inches long.
- Lastly, use a little bit of fray check at the end of your ribbon so it won't fray when you wash it.
3. Table Runner
Visit your local discount cloth store and find a nice cloth napkin. Usually, the edges of these clothes are already finished so that means much less sewing for you.
Just stitch down the sides and give it a half-inch seam allowance and press the seams open so it will have a nice and flat look later on. You can add some ribbons or other embellishments if you want it to look fancier.
4. Flannel Coasters
Coasters are a must-have especially when there's a family gathering happening soon. You can make them by following these steps:
- Cut your fabric to four and a half by four and a half inches and you need a front and a back piece in order to make it reversible.
- Use some batting for extra absorbency and start sewing the edges of your coaster.
- Also, make sure to give it a long hard press so the seam is nice and flat.
5. Cord Keeper
Cords are kind of messy to look at so here's something that can help organize it. The amount of fabric you'll need is very minimal so you can use the remaining scraps of fabrics from your previous project.
- First, you need two pieces of fabric that are about two by five inches.
- You want to place these fabrics right sides together and stitch it all the way around, leaving an opening.
- Next, turn them right side out after you clip the corner and give it a nice good press so that the seam is laying flat.
- Lastly, add a piece of velcro and put it on lengthwise so it can be adjusted for whatever kind of cord you are trying to keep.

6. Fabric Bookmarks

Paper bookmarks are nice but if you want something that lasts longer, a fabric bookmark should be a practical option. This is similar to how the cord keeper is done, only easier.
Once you are done combining the two pieces of fabric, you can just poke a hole at the top and insert a ribbon on it.
7. Business Card Holder
This project is so versatile that it has a lot of other uses other than keeping business cards in place. You can use it as a container for smaller gadgets or even jewelry like necklaces and rings.
All you need are:
- two pieces of fabric, preferably 4.5 x 6 inches
- two pieces of interfacing fabrics of the same size
- a pair of scissors
Instructions:
- Start by pairing one interface fabric with one of the fabrics and fold them over.
- Repeat that step for the other pair.
- Sew all the way around one of the folded pieces. You need to sew around 1/4″ in from the edges to maximize the space inside once the two fabrics are combined.
- Cut one pair by about an inch from the top.
- Once you have a shorter and taller piece, you can start sewing around the outer edges.
- Also, you can use the scissors to make a decorative border before combining the two fabrics.
- Trim the excess threads to finish.
8. Scented Sachets
Here's something you can add in your cabinets to keep moths away. We all know that the smell of mothballs is unpleasant, but did you know that lavender has moth-repelling properties while producing a nice scent?
To do this project, you only need:
- two pieces of fabrics
- a sewing kit
- some moth-repelling lavender buds
Instructions:
- Begin by sewing two squares together while leaving a 1 1/2-inch opening on one side and a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
- Fill it with moth-repelling lavender buds then close it by sewing the last side.
9. Pen/Glasses Holder
This project helps if your bag is pretty cramped and you need something flexible to hold your stuff. Same steps with the business card holder, only this time, you need two longer pair of fabrics.
To make it different, you can add a button so you can close it and keep your small belongings in place.
